The Gender Affirmative and Supportive Surgery Evaluation Tool version 2.0 (Gender ASSET 2.0) is an assessment tool developed by trans and genderqueer health professionals Zo Amaro Jimenez, PsyD, (they/he) and Colt M. St. Amand, PhD, MD, (he/they). The Gender ASSET 2.0 is designed for health providers including nurses, medical providers, mental health professionals, and social workers to use in support of transgender clients preparing to undergo surgery as a part of their gender transition. This online course includes an (optional) hardcopy Gender ASSET 2.0 workbook along with on-demand training videos and sample letters.

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) sets forth the Standards of Care (SOC). The 8th version of the SOC takes a very different approach to access to surgery than the previous version which the original Gender ASSET was based on. Whereas the SOC7 recommended one or two mental health evaluations and letters from mental health providers before they can access surgery, the SOC8 does not recommend mental health evaluations or letters at all before accessing surgery, yet they acknowledge that insurance companies and/or surgeons may still require a letter. Instead, the SOC8 recommends one health assessment by a nurse, general medical provider, mental health professional, social worker, or similar. Thus, the Gender ASSET 2.0 is designed for use by these groups of health professionals instead of specific to mental health professionals. As was previously true for mental health providers, now with additional types of assessors, the many health providers have neither received adequate nor comprehensive training in providing this type of evaluation and many are not familiar with the multiple surgical options available or the process of recovering from a major surgery.

Led by Drs. Colt M. St. Amand (he/they) and Zo Amaro Jimenez (they/he), this multi-part workshop is designed for health professionals who would like to receive training on evaluating and writing letters for transgender individuals who desire to undergo surgical procedures to further actualize their gender embodiment. The specific focus will be on assisting clients to be practically prepared for the process of surgery and recovery.
