Research has revealed alarmingly high rates of suicide attempt in transgender people. This workshop will aim to increase participants’ understanding of risk and resilience factors for suicidal behavior in this population, as well as teach culturally-informed methods of suicide assessment and prevention. In order to improve the current condition of treatment for this population, providers’ ethical responsibilities of respecting the dignity and worth of all people, increasing scientific knowledge of behavior and people’s understanding of themselves, protecting human rights, and nonmaleficence will be reviewed throughout this course as they pertain to providing services for transgender people. Frameworks for understanding distress and suicidality will be grounded in the interplay between the evidence based gender minority stress model and the interpersonal theory of suicide. Based on the combined framework of these models, recommendations for both mental and medical health providers for effective suicide assessment and prevention will be provided.
